Janurary 2022
MPVs like Ertiga are one of the most selling cars in India. Multi-Purpose Vehicles such as these are relatively practical and cater to almost every user’s need. They are comfortable enough for road trips with friends/family and run for daily use.
Up till now, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has been the top-selling MPV; let’s see if the competition coming next year is worthy:
1. Toyota Rumion
Toyota recently launched the Rumion in South Africa; it is a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The looks have been tweaked with a new front grille, but the same design.
The car has no mechanical changes, and the India-spec Rumion could also have a similar interior. The pricing is expected to be slightly higher than the Ertiga.
2. Maruti Suzuki XL7
The Maruti Suzuki XL6 sits above the Ertiga and is slightly more premium. It has been running since 2019 and has a little rugged appeal, along with exterior tweaks. We can expect the 7-seater version known as XL7 to come to India.
XL7 could have a black roof & spoiler for contrast. It could be similar to the Indonesia-Spec XL7 with slightly more extensive touchscreen infotainment, IRVM with rear camera view & bench middle row seats. In addition to the cosmetic upgrades, there will be 111-litre additional boot space. XL6 is also expected to receive a major facelift next year.
3. Hyundai Stargazer
Hyundai is also working on a new MPV project codenamed as ‘KS’; it could be known as the Stargazer. An MPV was spied testing in Indonesia in a fully camouflaged manner. It is expected to launch in Indonesia first then reach India sometime in 2022.
The spy shots reveal an inclined windshield & a heavy rear. It could have both 6 & 7 seater options to choose from. Kia is also working on a more affordable MPV codenamed ‘KY’.
4. Tata Hexa-Safari Edition
Hexa was launched in 2017 in the Indian market, based on the Aria. Tata rectified the mistakes they made with the Aria and made Hexa successful. It was discontinued in 2019 due to the BS-VI norms.
However, we can expect Hexa to be revived in a Safari edition as Tata showcased it in the 2020 Auto Expo. It could be powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine and have a 4×4 option.
5. Kia Carens
Most recently revealed Carens is a new MPV by Kia, which will also be exclusively manufactured in India. It is powered by a 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine churning out 115hp & 144Nm torque mated to a 6-speed manual.
A turbo variant with 140hp & 242Nm torque coupled to a DCT is also offered. It will reach the showrooms & people soon in early 2022.
6. MG G10
The MG G10 will be a luxury MPV competing against the Kia Carnival. The global-spec version is powered by a 2.0L engine available in petrol & diesel; mated to a 6-speed & 8-speed AT.
It will consist of features such as a 3-piece panoramic sunroof along with power sliding rear doors, a 10.1-inch infotainment system and other premium features. It is expected to reach India in mid-2022 with a few tweaks.
