How Long Does Coronavirus Last on Your Phone, Cash & Delivery Packages?

Studies have shown that our humble cellphone consists of 10 times more germs than a toilet seat. Let’s not ignore such sources of contamination and stay clean!
As Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc in the lives of people around the globe, medical experts are urging everyone to maintain personal hygiene, beginning with social distancing and washing hands several times a day.

While these are, no doubt, the best methods to combat this deadly pandemic, it is of utmost importance to adopt certain practices that ensure no transfer of virus through contact with another person or any inanimate surface.

A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine assesses the stability of COVID-19 in aerosols and on five different surfaces like aerosols, plastic, stainless steel, copper, and cardboard, and estimates their respective decay rates. According to the study:

1. Dab while sneezing/coughing

It is generally recommended that you see a doctor and possibly get the Covid-19 test done if you are suffering from cold and cough. However, even if your ailment is a mere seasonal flu, it is always best to sneeze or cough into your elbow instead of your palms.

Whether you are in the presence of another person or alone, this simple step can go a long way in keeping you healthy. Also, remember to wash your hands (for 20 seconds) every time you sneeze or cough.

If you have a consistent cold, do not forget to put on a protective mask.

2. Keeping your phone clean

Now that most of us are quarantined inside our homes, our smartphones are inevitably becoming our only companions. Unfortunately, studies have shown that our humble cellphone consists of 10 times more germs than a toilet seat, and COVID-19 tends to survive on plastic surfaces for up to 3 days or more.

Your cellphone needs a thorough cleanup now and then just like your hands and here’s a comprehensive guide to disinfect it:
  • Use a slightly wet disinfectant wipe to clean your screen and back of the phone gently Contrary to previous belief, this process is applicable for Apple devices as well.

  • Dab a lint-free cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol or commercially available hand-sanitiser and wipe it clean. Don’t use Dettol or such disinfectant liquids.

  • Alternatively, moisten a paper towel or cloth with light-foaming hand wash, very gently and carefully rub it over the phone screen and wipe it off with another clean, slightly damp cloth/towel.

  • Repeat this process at least once or twice a day, depending on the usage and exposure.

  • Never use bleach or submerge your phone in sanitiser or any other disinfecting agent.

  • Even if your phone is advertised to be water-resistant, it is best not to hold it under running water or dip it in a water vessel.

3. Keeping the home clean in these times of Covid-19

  • Door knobs, switches, tabletops, furniture etc. happen to be the most touched surfaces inside a home. Amid the Coronavirus outbreak, it is of utmost importance to clean and disinfect them regularly.

  • Use a mixture of regular soap/detergent and water or use a standard disinfectant solution to wipe these surfaces clean.

  • Vacuum regularly and make sure to mop the floors daily with floor disinfectant liquid.

  • If you regularly use community elevators at your apartment complex, avoid touching the buttons with fingers to prevent contact transmission. An ingenious way is to make use of a toothpick for pressing the button and dispose of it immediately in the trash.

4. Keep virus away from your food

Covid-19 can survive up to three days on stainless steel and plastic surfaces. So, it is best to disinfect your kitchen utensils & cutlery with disinfectant dish wash every time before eating.

Note: Make sure you are cooking your vegetables and proteins at a high temperature and consuming your food while hot.

5. In these times of Covid-19, opt for contact less delivery

From takeaway food to packages, delivery executives are a regular now at our doorsteps. Most of the food delivery and e-commerce platforms are enabling the option of contact less delivery wherein the package is left at your door by the executive, which you pick up a while later, and make sure you opt for this facility now.

Another surefire way of transmission is the exchange of currency notes. It is recommended to entirely avoid cash exchange at the moment. Opt for digital payment options instead.

Try your best to follow the rules mentioned above diligently, and keep yourself and your surroundings clean as much as possible. That is the very first step to protect yourself from the highly contagious virus.

ReadingTree – Early Childhood Education , An Alternate Approach (Pre Primary to Sr.KG)

About Reading Tree

Reading Tree is into early childhood education where emphasis is on overall developmental needs of the child. It inculcates different methodology based on the experiences and learning with the children.

It is an alternative approach from that of a more mainstream preschool. The children are welcomed by teachers with a hug and nurtured in a home-like set up. They follow a predictable routine with days set for painting, art and crafts, sensory play, cooking etc. The curriculum is an integration of arts and academics for children from Playgroup through Senior K.G. The child’s imagination is brought alive through stories, role plays, nature walks and involving them in day to day activities.

The class rooms are designed to recreate home like atmosphere where children feel comfortable, safe and inspired to learn. These spaces create an environment that is not only homely and protective, but also very personal to the child where they carry out day to day activities like cooking, baking, art and crafts, reading, story-telling as a part of their academics. It seeks to provide an unhurried and creative learning environment for children. ‘The Reading Tree’ school program helps children understand the world by providing predictability through rhythm which is a gentle repetition of everyday activities.

The Reading Tree’ has been successfully accredited with the British Council International School Award 2012 – 2015. The British Council International School Award supports the school in embedding international learning into the curriculum. Working towards it gives children and teachers a new perspective on the world, and the skills to work in a global economy.

Reading Tree emphasises development of a child on
3 R’s – Rhythm :

Rhythm :

The Reading Tree program helps children understand the world by providing predictability through rhythm. Rhythm in this instance is not about music, but rather about the gentle repetition of everyday activities. This provides ease and sense of security.

Repetition:

Repetition is incorporated in our daily rhythms. This brings about consistency and in turn helps to cultivate discipline.

Reverence :

Reverence is nothing but awe, wonder, respect ,beauty, peace and grace. By practicing reverence in life for everything we do and say we become deeply rooted and alive.

Curriculum followed:

Indoor Play: It is through play that children learn to know the world around them.

Circle Time: The heart of the program - Circle time happens throughout the day in different forms where children sing together and move together into a seasonal or a story based theme.

Soul Time: 30 minutes of daily quiet time where children are involved in the artistic activities that nourish their soul. Each day they dedicate to an art form as per their feelings.

Outdoor play brings in children, a sense of connection with nature and their surroundings. Their curiosity comes alive when they are allowed to explore, see, touch, feel and make connections with the world around them.

Story Time : Every day the children gather around the teacher for an oral story. Stories are told over a period of time; but not in a mechanical manner. The images and characters live in the teacher, allowing for a human connection to language and story that are shared with the children.

Music : Children are naturally inclined to music and have an appreciation for the same. We can build on this natural instinct by using music to enrich lives of our children.

Maths : Math concepts are dealt from concrete hands on experiences leading onto abstract. Stories are used to explain some concepts which help the child to remember and understand better.

Language : Creating love for learning is an essential part of 'The Reading Tree' program. Movement form an integral part. Facial expressions, gestures, sounds, visual aids, concrete objects and ideas are used.

Global School Partnerships – An exciting approach to global citizenship.

The Reading Tree also widens the child’s horizon and we have entered into Global School Partnerships. We are in constant exchange programs.

17 Most Versatile Ingredients to Stockpile in Your Pantry (Part 2)

11. Frozen vegetables

Try frozen vegetables like spinach, kale, cauliflower, broccoli, and corn.

Just as with fruits, vegetables are frozen at their peak, so you'll be getting the same nutritious boost of phytonutrients (plant nutrients with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits) as you do from fresh produce. Not to mention, frozen veggies can sub the fresh kind in most recipes—just take into account that they'll release some extra liquid when thawing.

12. Canned fish

When you want to hold off on making that next grocery trip for some fresh meat, make canned tuna or salmon your go-to source of protein (besides beans, of course). Feller recommends canned fish because it's not only convenient, it's also rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

If you only keep canned tuna in your pantry for tuna salad, let this quarantine be your opportunity to try using it in new ways! We like to layer it on some crusty toast with a splash of olive oil, or mix it into pasta salads with tomatoes and olives. When it comes to canned salmon, we like it in salads and sandwiches. Sardines are great for a quick homemade pate, and anchovies . . . well, they just bring that umami burst of flavor to whatever needs it (soups, pasta sauces, and even dips).

13. Low-sodium soup

Restaurants are off-limits, the wait for takeout is an hour, and don't even get us started on how long delivery will take. If you need a quick meal when you're sick of cooking (or just sick), nothing is as healing as knowing that hot soup is just a few minutes away.

The healthiest soups will have a balance of carbs, fiber, and protein and very low levels of sodium. Our dietitians recommend these healthy Progresso soups as best canned soup options. And if you're looking to doctor up that old dusty can of Campbell's soup you've had in your pantry for months, use the different varieties in soups, pasta sauces, and casseroles.

14. Low-sodium broths

Yes, you can make soup with just about anything in your fridge and some water, but Feller recommends stocking up on low-sodium chicken, and veggie broths and using them as flavor enhancers. Just make sure they are truly low in sodium (under 150 milligrams per serving), which will help prevent bloating and reduce the strain on your heart.

You don't have to only use broths as soup bases, either. Use them to add flavor to any recipe that calls for water was a base—risottos, slow-cooker meat recipes, and sauces and gravies.

15. Olive oil

Every healthy diet should include a good amount of healthy fats. And because we're talking pantry essentials here, we can't recommend stocking up on avocados. While the fatty fruits are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, we all know they tend to go bad much faster than it takes for them to ripen on your counter.

For a shelf-stable version of healthy fats, we recommend olive oil. Feller loves how versatile olive oil is—you'll be using it to fry up crispy chickpeas, sauté veggies, drizzle on top of bread, or preserve your garlic.

16. Ginger

If you're starting to feel bloated from being cooped up inside all day, make sure to add ginger to your next grocery delivery or supermarket run. (Also, make sure you go on a walk as often as possible.)

Ginger is known for its anti-bloat properties that help soothe troubled stomachs. This root lasts a long time in the refrigerator, but you can also keep it in the freezer (which also makes it easier to grate). Use ginger in stir fries, slice it to make ginger tea, or use it to flavor soups, smoothies, and soaked oats.

17. Nuts

This includes almonds, pistachios, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, and pecans.

Whether you prefer them raw or ground into a butter, nuts are the perfect healthy snack when holed up at home. One of the most common responses to being bored and stressed is—you guessed it—snacking. To maintain a healthy diet, forego greasy chips, and opt for unsalted nuts instead. Feller likes nuts as a source of "protein, fiber, and vitamin E."

Besides being great for snacking, nuts and their butters are an awesome fatty flavor supplement to salads, smoothies, and baked goods.

No Domestic Help? 22 Home Hacks to Make Your Life Easy & Sorted

It is critical for all domestic help to be given paid leave, so that we are all safe. In the meanwhile, here’s how our homes can be kept in order.

As cases of Covid 19 continue to rise across the world, we must take self-quarantine and social distancing very seriously.

Here, it is also necessary to give some (paid) time off to the people who make our lives so much easier—domestic help, housekeeping staff and cooks—as they are just as vulnerable, if not more, to this highly contagious disease.

If you’re someone who is used to doing housework every once in a while, this won’t make much of a difference, but if you are entirely dependent on your house help, it can be quite a trying time.

But, worry, not! Here are 22 easy tips to make sure your home remains sparkly clean even without paid help.

A family that cleans together stays together:

Known as a traditional festival, Gudi Padwa is the most popular Marathi term that shows the festival of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. It shows the first days of the Chaitra month.

Get everyone responsible for things they use— that means, everyone washes the dishes they use, the person who bathes last cleans the bathroom, and the one who loves the pet the most cleans their hair.

Common Rooms, common responsibilities:

The floors need to be cleaned every day but don’t go overboard with it. Sweep them daily but mop them on alternating days.

Garbage disposal and scrubbing of toilets need to be rotating responsibilities.

Every day, pick out one or two new cleaning tasks. It can just be cleaning the television screen or making DIY wire organisers or undertaking a Marie-Kondo for closets. A task that doesn’t take more than 30 minutes but leaves you feeling more productive.

Make sure you have a dedicated place for everything- things like old newspapers, keys, TV remotes have a way of making even a clean house look untidy. Give them a dedicated basket, hook or shelf to keep them when not in use.

Every time you leave a room, look around and check for things that are not in use and not in place. Just one item every time you clear can keep your home spotless.

Cleaning the kitchen: Where the magic happens

Ordering in should be your last resort now that most of the cities are under lockdown. Cook at home but reduce the number of dishes you cook every day. Go for two per meal instead of four (you can compensate with pickles, jams and chutneys instead).

Go for as many one-pot meals and minimalist recipes as you can.

Be conscious of using fewer dishes than usual. Cover glasses after drinking water and re-use them when you’re thirsty again. Use cook-and-serve kind of vessels to reduce washing.

Soak dishes with greasy food immediately after use. You can wash them later but the water will pull out stubborn stains and make your job easier.

If you live with family or friends, divide the dishwashing chore into equal parts. Washing-scrubbing-drying. This will reduce the pile of dishes faster. If you live alone, a one-sponge policy can help you- soak a sponge in liquid dish soap once and do as many dishes as possible with that amount. Take a break. Repeat.

Put away dry utensils without any delay

Bedroom: Your personal space should always be comforting

Get into the habit of making your bed as soon as you get up. One small productive thing at the beginning of the day sets the wheel in motion. Decluttering begins here.

If you have kids getting bored at home, make a game out of safe chores- like mopping dishes or watering plants.

This is a great time to try out all those DIY hacks to keep your cupboards organised. Turn empty boxes and unused hooks into the perfect assets to organise storage.

Follow this simple rule—no clothes or accessories should ever be on the bed, chairs, tables or floor. They should either be on you, in the washing machine or the cupboard.

Pull a Monica and organise your cupboard into frequently worn top wear, frequently worn bottom wear, clothes for special occasions, undergarments, nightwear etc. Everything that is delicate or fancy goes on hangers. All apparel that will be worn only once before washing can be folded and stacked.

Bathroom Cleaning: It need not be the dirtiest of the rooms

Switch acid for bio-enzymes or bacteria-based toilet cleaners. The latter is more sustainable and keep your toilet bowl cleaner for longer. Acid merely burns the organic waste and its job is done after you flush it. Bacteria based cleaners will keep acting for days together, making toilet cleaning a breeze within a few weeks of usage.

Keep a bucket in the bathroom to dump used clothes in. Schedule a day for the laundry and follow it.

Wipe away the moisture and steam as soon as you are done bathing- especially if you use soap or shampoo bars. After use, keep bathrooms ventilated at least till the steam passes.

Make sure sanitary pads are disposed of regularly. Don’t let them sit inside the toilet dustbin for more than three days.
