Traffic woes continue to haunt motorists on Sat

Thane : After having a harrowing time on Friday evening, traffic woes continued to haunt motorists on Saturday morning as well. This was due to the unusual rush of revellers travelling out of the city to celebrate gatari. The ongoing civil works also added to the problems.

The back-to-back snarls has now become a frequent menace on the stretch between Kasarwadavli and Teen Haath Naka, delaying the movement of traffic by several minutes on a daily basis. Several motorists who faced massive inconvenience on Friday had to face the situation on Saturday as well as several areas of the city remained clogged for a major part of the morning.

A commuter travelling from Pawar Nagar said that it took her nearly 25 minutes more to reach Thane station on Saturday than what it usually takes. “I left home around 2pm and still the traffic movement was slow moving at several junctions. I wonder when the authorities will think seriously about traffic management in the city as we are facing a daily ordeal travelling in and out of the city,” said a resident.

Those travelling in the morning were inconvenienced the most as a mishap had taken place near Tatwagyan Vidyapith, while another was reported later in the day at Kalwa naka. This just added to the congestion on the already clogged roads.

Prasanna Shetty, a resident of GB road, who was travelling to Badlapur with his friends for the weekend gatari celebration, said that it took him nearly an hour to reach Kongaon. “As the Mumbra bypass was shut, we already had to take a detour via Kalyan to reach a farmhouse in Badlapur. The traffic was choked on both sides of the road. The time we took to reach Badlapur was way beyond our expectations and we all were tired due to the long drive,” he said.

Meanwhile, social media was abuzz with complaints from harried motorists who found no solace for their grievances from the Thane traffic police. Ankit Murarka said that it took him nearly 23 minutes to travel from Kopri to Mulund, which is a distance of 2.5km; while Tushar Sathe said that the presence of heavy vehicles during the day blocked major parts of the roads. However, traffic officials said that they were trying their best to bring the situation under control which, they claimed, was aggravated due to the rains and the recurring potholes at several places along the city main roads and highways.

“We have been requesting the TMC to undertake repairs of the potholes at night when there is less traffic,” said an official.
